| ecology | The study of the relationship between living things and their environment |
| environment | Everything that surrounds a plant or anima |
| Habitat/ecosystem | the place where a living organism lives |
| Community | is a group of plants and animals in a habitat |
| population | is a group of the same species in a habitatF |
| niche | the role an organism has in a habitat |
| producers | organisms that make their own food by photosynthesis |
| consumers | organisms that feed on other organisms. They can't make their own food. |
| Decomposers | Organisms that feed on dead plants or animals |
| food chain | a diagram that shows the energy transfer between a series of organisms in a habitat |
| food web | is two or more food chains connected |
| adaptations | are changes which occur in organisms to help them better suit and live in their habitat |
| Interdependence | when organisms depend on each other for specific things, i.e bees depend on flowers for nectar and flowers depend on bees for pollination |
| Energy flow | the pathway of energy transferred from one organism to the next in an ecosystem due to feeding , e.g. along a food chain |
| Competition | an occurrence where organisms seek a resource in a habitat that is limited |
| Thermometer | used to measure temperature of soil and water |
| Rainfall gauge | used to measure rainfall |
| compass | used to measure aspect of habitat |
| Pooter | a jar with two rubber pipes used to suck up and collect insects |
| beating tray | used to collect small animals from trees by shaking the tree |
| sweep net | a large net swept through long grass to collect small animals |
| pitfall trap | a trap where insects fall in to be collected |
| Quadrat | a square apparatus used to estimate the number of plants in a habitat |
