| predator | a consumer that hunts and eats another animal |
| prey | any animal that is hunted by others for food |
| producer | organism that makes its own food for energy |
| consumer | organism that cannot make its own food |
| decomposer | organism that gets its energy by breaking down wastes and dead organisms |
| food chain | a series of steps by which energy moves from one type of living thing to another |
| food web | a diagram that combines many food chains into one picture |
| photosynthesis | the process in which producers use carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to produce oxygen and sugar. |
| symbiosis | a relationship between two organisms of a different species that benefits at least one of the organisms |
| parasitism | a relationship in which one of the organisms lives on or in a host and harms it |
| commensalism | a relationship between two species in which one benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed |
| mutualism | a relationship in which both species benefit |
