Term | Definition |
Unicellular | Organisms made up of only one cell. |
Eukaryotic | Cells with a nucleus. |
Cell membrane | A thin, flexible barrier around the outside of all cells. This organelle controls what enters and leaves the cell (selective permeability). |
Regulate | To control something. |
Cell Wall | A thick protective layer around the outside of plant cells. This organelle gives plant cells a stiff and rigid shape. |
Vacuole | The organelle that stores extra water, vitamins, and other materials. |
Ribosome | This organelle creates proteins for the cell. |
Organelle | The parts of a cell. Each one has a specific function |
Organ | A group of tissue working together to perform a specific function. |
Nucleus | The control center of cells. Contains the DNA of the cell (in eukaryotic cells) |
Multicellular | Organisms made up of more than one cell. |
Cytoplasm | The liquid that fills the inside of cells. |
Mitochondria | The organelle that converts sugar into ATP energy. |
ATP energy | The type of energy that living things need. Produced in the mitochondria by combining sugar and oxygen. |
Tissue | A group of cells working together to perform a specific function. |
Organ System | A group of organs working together to perform a specific function. |
Prokaryotic | Cells that do not have a nucleus. |
Lysosome | The organelle that removes waste from the cell. |
Chloroplast | The organelle that absorbs sunlight and turns it into sugar (photosynthesis) |
Selective Permeability | Choosing what enters or leaves. |
Cell | The basic building blocks of living things |
