Urban Sprawl | Tendency of cities to grow outward in an unchecked manner. |
Urban Decentralization | To move business operations from core city areas into outlying areas such as suburbs. |
Site | The place where the settlement is located. |
Periphery | The lesser developed part of a town or region, that is usually located at the edge of the cities/regions and far away from the developed, more "sophisticated" and often beautiful city/regional center. |
World Cities | (Global city) a city that is a control center of the global economy, in which major decisions are made about the world’s commercial networks and financial markets. |
Boomburgs | A suburb that has grown rapidly into a large and sprawling city with more than 100,000 residents. |
Urbanization | The movement of people from rural areas to cities. |
Suburbanization | Movement of people from urban core areas to the surrounding outskirts of a city. |
Urban Hierarchy | A ranking of settlements (hamlet, village, town, city, metropolis) according to their size and economic functions. |
Metacity | A city with 20 million inhabitants or more. |
Edge City | A concentration of business, shopping and entertainment that developed in the suburbs, outside of a city’s traditional downtown or central business district. |
Infrastructure | The basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. |
Situation | Describes where the settlement is in relation to other settlements and features of the surrounding area. |
Exurbs | A semi-rural district located beyond the suburbs that is often inhabited by “well-to-do” families. |
Semi-Periphery | Part of a city that shares characteristics of main city and periphery. |
