| globe | a 3-dimensional, or spherical. representation of earth |
| map | a 2-dimensional, or flat, representation of earth |
| latitude | imaginary lines that run east to west, parallel to the equator; there are 90˚ north and 90˚ south of the equator; the equator is 0˚ |
| equator | imaginary line that circles the middle of the Earth: the center line of latitude |
| prime meridian | runs through Greenwich, England and is 0˚; there are 180˚ east and 180˚ west of the prime meridian |
| hemisphere | half the Earth; equator divides the Earth into the Northern and |
| title | tells the subject of the map or globe |
| symbols | represent information such as natural resources and economic activities |
| labels | are the names of places, such as cities, countries, rivers, and mountains |
| colors | represent different kinds of information; for example, the color blue usually represents water |
| lines of latitude | are imaginary horizontal lines that measure the distance north or south of the equator |
| lines of longitude | imaginary lines that run from north to south from the North Pole to the South Pole; they measure distance east or west from the prime meridian |
| scale | shows how much distance on Earth is represented by distance on the map or globe; for example a half inch on the map above represents 100 miles on Earth |
| legend | or key, explains what the symbols and colors on the map or globe represent |
| compass rose | shows direction on a map |
| cardinal directions | the four main directions north (N), south (S), east (E), west (W) |
| intermediate directions | north west, southwest, northeast, southeast |
| locator globe | shows the specific area of the world that is shown on a map |
| cartographer | or mapmakers, create different kinds of maps for different purposes |
| elevation | height of a physical feature above sea level |
| relief map | the change of elevation from one place to another |
| projection | way of showing Earth's curved surfaces on a flat map |
