Term | Definition |
Weathering | the process by which rock materials are broken down by the action of physical and chemical processes |
Chemical Weathering | the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by physical or mechanical means |
Chemical Weathering | the process by which rocks break down as a result of chemical reactions |
Erosion | the process by which wind, water, ice or gravity transports/moves soil and sediment from one location/place to another |
Deposition | when sediments are deposited, or dropped off, in a different location/place. This process changes the way earth looks over time. |
Ice/Frost wedging | form of physical weathering that involves the repeated freezing and thawing of water in areas with extremely cold weather; water seeps into small cracks in rocks and other materials and can break the rock when it expands |
Mass wasting | the downhill movement of large mass of rocks or soil due to gravity |
Plant growth | when parts of a plant grows into a rock and cracks it |
Exfoliation | outer layer of desert rocks undergo repeated stress as the temperature changes from day to night. (Heating & Cooling) |
Animal action | type of mechanical weathering where animals dig into ground and loosen soil. |
Abrasion | the grinding and wearing away of rock surfaces through the mechanical action of other rock or sand particles. (rock against rock) |
Carbonation | when the acid rain combines with rocks, and changes their chemical formations. |
Acid precipitation | rain, sleet or snow that contains a high concentration of acids wears away rock over time |
Lichen/moss | plants that release different acids on rocks which dissolve it and break down the chemical bonds |
Oxidation | reaction of rock minerals with oxygen, thus changing the mineral composition of the rock. (RUST) |
