| Term | Definition |
| Torque | A force that tends to rotate or turn an object. (A twisting force.) |
| Automation | The use of technology to ease human labor or to extend the mental or physical capabilities of humans. |
| Clockwise | Spinning in the same direction as the hands on a clock, or constantly turning to the right. |
| Pitch | The distance between adjacent threads in a screw. |
| Counter-clockwise | Spinning in the opposite direction as the hands on a clock, or constantly turning to the left |
| Drive gear | It's the gear attached to the power source of the mechanism and transmits power and motion to the rest of the system. (Otherwise known as the Input Gear.) |
| Driven gear | It's the gear at the END of a mechanism to which motion and power are transmitted to.(Also known as the Output Gear.) |
| Spur gear | The simplest type of gear consisting of a round shape with narrow pitched teeth (meaning teeth have a small gap) used to interlock with another gear |
| Gear ratio | (Dn : D) The speed of drive gear in relation to the driven gear. |
| Linear Motion | Movement in a straight line- continually going one direction. |
| Mechanism | An assembly of two or more gear pieces arranged so that the motion of one compels the motion of others. |
| Input | Something put into a system in order to achieve a result. |
| Oscillating motion | A swing back and forth (in an arch) at a regular rate, as a pendulum does. |
| Output | The results or product of an operation. |
| Sprocket gear | A toothed wheel designed with a wider pitch for the purpose of engaging and directly moving the links in a chain. |
| Reciprocating motion | A back and forth or up and down movement completed in one cycle |
| Rotary motion | Circular movement. |
