| asthma | disease charecterized by wheezing and shortness of breath |
| atelectasis | collapse or incomplete expansion of the lung |
| bronchitis | inflamation of the bronchi, |
| continous positive airway pressure (CPAP) | the application of positive airway pressure used throughout the respiratory cycle for a client w/spontaneous respirations |
| cor pulmonale | right sided heart failure |
| cyanosis | blue gray or purple discoloration of the skin and mucus membranes caused by low oxygen levels or reduced hemoglobin |
| dyspnea | labored resperations |
| emphysema | chronic respiratory disease characterized by overdistention and distruction of the alveolar walls. |
| empyema | collection of infected fluid in a body cavity; particularly in the pleura |
| hemoptysis | expectoration of blood |
| hypoxemia | decreased oxygen tension in the blood. |
| pleural effusion | collection of fluid in the serous membrane that line the lungs |
| pleurisy | inflammation of the pleural sac, can be associated w/upper respiratory infection, pulmonary embolus, thoracotomy, chest trauma, or cancer |
| pneumonia | inflammation of the parenchyma of the lungs. Causative organisms include bacteria, viruses, and fungi. |
| pulmonary embolus | the obstruction of the pulmonary artery or one of its branches by a clot or some other undissolved matter |
