EARTH LAYERS

TermDefinition
Crust the thin and solid outermost layer of the Earth above the mantle
Mantle the layer of rock between the Earth's crust and core
Core the central part of the Earth below the mantle
Inner core the absolute center of the Earth; although hot, pressure from the above layers causes this layer to be solid
Outer core the liquid layer that surrounds the solid inner core; it is liquid because it does not have as much pressure on it
Lithosphere the solid, outer layer of the Earth that contains the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle
Asthenosphere the soft layer of the mantle on which the tectonic plates move
Mesosphere the strong, lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and the outer core
How thick is the crust? 5-60 km thick
How thick is the mantle? 2900 km thick
How thick is the outer core? 2200 km thick
How thick is the inner core? 1400 km thick
What causes plates to move? convection currents
What is the thinnest layer? Crust
What is the thickest layer? Mantle
What minerals can be found in the crust? Oxygen and Silicon
What minerals can be found in the mantle? Iron, Silicon, Oxygen, and Magnesium
What minerals can be found in the inner and outer core? Iron and Nickel
List the three mechanical layers. Lithosphere, Mesosphere, and Aesthenosphere
List the four compositional layers. Crust, Mantle, Inner core, and Outer core

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
