Ecology Unit

Vocabulary for Species and Ecology Unit

Adaptations To grow or change physically/behaviorally over time. ex. hair, color.
Autotrophs Make their own food through sunlight or chemical. Producers/Plants
Camouflage An adaptation that allows an animal to hide from predators by blending in.
Carnivore Eats mostly meat ex. lion, tiger
Commensalism one benefits but the other isn't hurt. ex.moss/tree
Consumer organism that gets food by eating other organisms.
Decomposer gets food by breaking down dead stuff and returning nutrients to the world. ex. fungus, bacteria
Ecology The study of interactions between organism and their environments.
Ecosystems must have these: 1.energy 2. living organisms to convert energy into things necessary for life (plants) 3. recycling of materials between organisms and environment. ex.aquarium
Endangered Species a species that is in danger of becoming extinct.
Extinct a species that has died out completely. ZERO left
Food Web how food chains overlap in an ecosystem
Food Chain path of energy in food from one organism to another.
Habitat the place where a plant or animal naturally lives and grows.
Herbivore eats mainly plants ex. deer, rabbits, bees
Heredity traits passed down from parent to offspring.
Heterotrophs gets food by breaking down dead stuff and returning nutrients.
Mutualism both benefit ex. bee and flower
Omnivore eats both plants and animals ex. humans, seagulls, bear
Parasitism relationship where one organism lives inside another or on another, and it may cause harm.
Producer organism that can make its own food, but will get eaten by other organisms.
Scavenger eats dead plants and animals ex. vulture, hawks
Species a class of individuals having common characteristics
Symbiotic Relationships the relationship between organisms.
Threatened Species a species that is in danger of becoming endangered- hopefully enough still left to keep living.
