Trend in Hominin evolution Directional selection for increasing brain size.
Appears to coincide with increasing cultural & technological sophistication evolution of the human brain.
Lower Paleolithic 2.5 mya with simple broken rocks (Oldowan industry)
Acheulean 1.5 mya developed from the oldowan tools, this industry is typified by the biface hand axe.
Hand axe Tear-dropped shaped tool that was made by Homo ergaster and/or erectus, made all over from the Middle East to Europe and Africa. The shape was thought to be harwired in the early HOMO brain such as nest making is for birds.
Middle Paleolithic (Europe) or Middle Stone Age (Africa) 200-300 KYA Mousterian of Acheulean tradition (Europe Neanderthals & AMH still uses just the hand axe, while Africa MP added other new tools)
Prepared Core Technique Created after the AMH arrived in Europe, this teqchnique was mor efficent, allowing a series of sharp blades to be made from one piece of rock
Upper Paleolithic Transition 40 KYA AMH living side by side Neanderthals, making new tools from different materials, such as bone tools with harpoon like points. AMH chose their quality of stone carefully even traveling for it, while Neanderthals were still using any nearby stone.
AMH Anatomically Modern Humans
Atl-atl Upper paleolithic spear thrower. Increase the speed, force, distance and accuracy of prjectiles.
Ecological dominance-social competition hypothesis When the stakes are really high (life or death), then the cost of stupidity and the advantage of being relatively more intelligent are tremendous.
Marked change in the human mind-set through art. The upper Paleolithic transition, people projected value onto objects, used visual media to signal things about themselves, created sculptures of venus and created cave paintings.
