Definitions

TermDefinition
Staff used in music to show the location of notes
Each staff is identified by a treble or bass clef
Grand Staff has the treble and bass clef joined by a bracket (piano harps, marimba)
Treble Clef Known as the G Clef
Note names for 5 lines E G B D F
E G B D F stands for Every good boy does fine
The spaces spell FACE
Bass Clef is also the F Clef
The lines of the Bass Clef are G B D F A
G B D F A stands for Good Bags Don't Fall Apart
The spaces of the Bass Clef are A C E G
A C E G stands for All Cows Eat Grass
Interval The difference in pitch between two sounds.
Bar or Measure A segment of time corresponding to a specfic number of beats.
Bar Line Vertical lines that seperate the measures
Double bar line represents the end of a piece
Scale any set of musical notes ordered by fundamental frequency or pitch
Scale Degree refers to the position of a not on a scale relative to the tonic, the first and main note of the scale.
Degrees Indicate the size of intervals and chords and if they are major or minor.
Time Signature Looks like a fraction in math
4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8, 9/8, or 12/8 are examples of Time signature
The top number in a time signature represents how many beats are in a measure
The bottom number in a time signature represents what note gets the beat
Whole note is 4 beats
Half note is 2 beats
Quarter note is 1 beat
Eigth note is 1/2 beat
