Human Impacts

Human Impacts = 6th Grade Earth Space Science- Unit 2

TermDefinition
natural resources natural material that is used by humans, such as air, soil, minerals, water, petroleum, plants, and animals.
renewable resource natural material that is used by humans, such as air, soil, minerals, water, petroleum, plants, and animals.
non-renewable resource a resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which it is consumed
fossil fuels a nonrenewable resource formed from buried remains of plants and animals that lived long ago.
urbanization the growth of urban areas caused by people moving into cities.
land degradation is the process by which human activity and natural processes damage land to the point that it can no longer support the local ecosystem.
desertification is the process by which human activity and natural processes damage land to the point that it can no longer support the local ecosystem
deforestation removal of trees and other vegetation from an area
water pollution when waste or other material is added to water so that it is harmful to organisms that use it or live in it,
Point sources of water pollution Sources of water pollution such as paper mills, manufacturing plants, electric utility plants, and sewage plants.
non-point source pollution comes from many small sources and is more difficult to control. Most nonpoint- source pollution reaches water supplies by runoff or by seeping into groundwater-ex. city streets, roads, drains, farms, and mines.
Eutrophication A process by which nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, become highly concentrated in a body of water, leading to increased growth of organisms such as algae or cyanobacteria
greenhouse effect is the way by which certain gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, absorb and reradiate thermal energy.
air pollution contamination of the atmosphere by pollutants from human and natural sources
Particulates a tiny particle of solid that is suspended in air or water.
smog forms when ground-level ozone and vehicle exhaust react in the presence of sunlight.
acid precipitation rain, sleet, or snow that contains acids from air pollution
conservation Protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment-the wise use of natural resources.
Stewardship the careful and responsible management of a resource
