Note names and values

TermDefinition
crotchet A note worth one beat. It has a coloured notehead and stem.worth one beat. It has a coloured notehead and stem.
beat The basic unit of time that determines the speed. A constant pulse.
semibreve A note worth 4 beats. It is a hollow circle.
ostinato A repeated pattern - rhythmic or melodic
value How many beats a note is worth.
minim A note worth two beats. It has a hollow notehead and a stem.
rests Symbols that indicate silence in a piece of music.
semiquaver A note worth ¼ of a beat. It has a coloured notehead, a stem and 2 tails.
time signature The two numbers at the beginning of a piece of music, indicating how many beats are in each bar.
beam Horizontal line/s that group quavers or semiquavers
quaver A note worth ½ a beat. It has a coloured notehead, a stem and one tail.
rhythm A combination of notes and rests in patterns that match the beat and time signature.
barlines Vertical lines on the staff that divide notes into groups according to the time signature.
