What was chant? What was it used for? What is it's texture? Monophonic settings of text used in services of the early Christian church
What does the Catholic Mass represent? The last supper of Jesus and his disciples
What is the difference of the Mass Ordinary and the Mass Proper? Mass Ordinary= Chants that did not change, Mass Proper= Chants that did change depending on the time of day or year
What are the movements of the Mass Ordinary? Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei
Who was Hildegard of Bingen? A nun that had visions, she became an influential religious leader and wrote poetry and music for the nuns to use in worship
Who were the troubadours, trobairitz, and trouveres? Singer-poets who traveled and performed at courts
What does the word Renaissance mean? Rebirth
What was Humanism? What was emphasized? Emphasized study of grammar, rhetoric, poetry, history, and moral philosophy; emphasized human nature, potential, and accomplishments over religion
What was the Protestant reformation, and how did it influence music of the time? It was a humanist shift in thought to the individual, there were three branches and each branch composed their own worship music
Who was Josquin de Perez? "Master of Renaissance Choral Work"; published masses, motets, and secular vocal pieces
What is an oratorio? A large scale work similar to an opera, except no staging or costumes and typically on biblical topics
What is an opera? A large scale work with costuming and staging, typically secular with historical or mythological plots
Who were composers in the Baroque era? George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach
What is the difference in the harpsichord and the clavichord? Harpsichord= Strings are plucked by quills, Clavichord= Strings are struck by metal blades, Organ= Wind goes through pipes of diff lengths
What was the development of the piano in the Classical era? They were used more in the home and expanded to the middle class
Who were composers in the Classical era? Mozart and Haydn
What is Lieder and what composers are associated? German art song for voice and piano; Schubert
What composers are associated with Exoticism? Franz Liszt (Exoticism= Music that evoked certain feelings and settings of distant lands and cultures)
Who were composers in the Romantic era? Beethoven and Franz Shubert
