TermDefinition
What is Music? Music is organized sounds.
What is Pitch? Pitch is how high or low sound is produced.
What is Beat? Beat is the foundation of music (a repeating unit).
What is Rhythm? Rhythm is the pattern of sound.
What are Dynamics? Dynamics are how loud or soft music is. (volume of music)
What is Melody? Melody is the combination of pitches to create a whole.
What is Harmony? Harmonies are tones created to support the melody.
What is Tempo? Tempo is how fast or slow music is.
What is Timbre? Timbre is the tone quality of instruments. Timbre is the ability to differentiate between instruments and voices.
What are Textures? Texture is how music is put together. There are three kinds of musical textures: Monophonic, Homophonic, and Polyphonic.
Monophonic Monophonic texture is a piece of music where there is only one melody.
Homophonic Homophonic texture is a single melody is played with supporting chords/harmonies.
Polyphonic Polyphonic texture has independent melodies that weave together to produce many sounds.
What is a Staff A staff is 5 lines and 4 spaces.
(Clefs) There are two clefs present on the staff, the treble clef which is above and the base clef which is below.
What are the Treble Clef Lines? Spaces? The treble clef lines are e,g,b,d,f. The treble clef spaces are f,a,c,e
What are the Base Clef Lines? Spaces? The base clef lines are g,b,d,f,a. The base clef spaces are a,c,e,g.
What is the Orchestra? The orchestra is a group of instrument families such as strings, woodwinds, brasses, and percussions that come together to create a whole.
What are the Strings? 1. Violin 2. Viola 3. Cello 4. Double bass 5. Harp
What are the Woodwinds? 1. Piccolo 2. Flute 3. Oboe 4. Clarinet 5. Bassoon 6. Saxophone
What are the Brasses? 1. Trumpet 2. Trombone 3. French Horn 4. Tuba
What are the Percussions? 1. Snare Drum 2. Cymbals 3. Bass Drum 4. Tambourine 5. Triangle 6. Timpani 7. Xylophone 8. Chimes
What are Variations? Variations are different ways of playing the same que.
What is the Concert Master? The Concert Master is usually the 1st Violin and their job is to tune the orchestra.
What is Grave? Grave is slow and solemn
What is Lento? Lento means slowly
What is Largo? Largo means broadly
What is Adagio? Adagio is at ease, slow and stately
What is Andante? Andante is a walking pace, moderately slow
What is Moderato? Moderato means moderately
What is Allegretto? Allegretto means moderately fast (less than allegro)
What is Allegro? Allegro means fast, quickly, and bright
What is Vivace? Vivace means briskly and lively
What is Vivacissimo? Vivacissimo means very fast and lively
What is Vite? Vite means fast in French.
What is Schnell? Schnell means fast in German.
What is Pianissimo? Pianissimo means very soft
What is Piano? Piano means soft
What is Mezzo? Mezzo means moderately
What is Forte? Forte means loud
What is Fortissimo? Fortissimo means very loud
What is Accelerando? Accelerando means gradual speeding up
What is Ritardando? Ritardando means gradual slowing down
What is Rubato? Rubato means free adjustment of (slowing) the tempo for an expressive purpose
What is Crescendo? Crescendo means to gradually increase volume.
What is Decrescendo? Decrescendo means to gradually decrease volume.
