The Great Air Race

Twig Science - Volume 2

TermDefinition
air mass a large horizontal volume of air in the atmosphere that is mostly even in temperature and moisture
altitude the height of an object or point in relation to sea level
atmosphere the layers of gas surrounding a planet
atmospheric pressure the weight of the gases that make up the Earth’s atmosphere
barometer a scientific instrument used to measure air pressure in a certain environment
biosphere the regions of the surface and atmosphere of the Earth in which living organisms can exist
cold front the edge of a cold air mass that is moving forward
condensation the process by which a gas turns into a liquid
crosswind a wind blowing across the path of a traveling object, which makes it difficult to maintain direction
density the amount of particles in a given amount of matter and how closely packed together they are
dew point the temperature at which vapor, such as smoke or fog, begins to condense and form dew
energy transfer the process of energy moving from one energy store to another
evaporation the process by which a liquid turns into a gas
front the boundary formed when two air masses meet, creating some type of weather or weather or precipitation
geosphere the Earth’s rocks and soil
gravity a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass are brought toward one another
ground water the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand, and rock
hydrosphere the parts of the Earth made up of liquid water, ice, or water vapor
isobar a line on a weather map to show points that have the same air pressure
leeward side the side of a mountain that faces away from the direction that wind usually comes from - it is drier and less windy
ocean current a pattern of movement of water in the ocean
particle a very tiny piece of matter
precipitation rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to or condenses on the ground
probability the likelihood of something occurring
rain shadow the area on the leeward side of a mountain that gets less rain because the mountain has caused it to fall on the windward side
relative humidity a measurement of water vapor in the air, compared to how much there could be
surface runoff excess water, from rain or other sources that flows over the land surface
temperature the measure of how hot or cold a substance or object is
topography the shape and features of an area of land
transpiration the movement of water vapor from a plant into the atmosphere
turbulence a state of unsteady up-and-down movement, caused by irregular air currents
variable something that can be controlled or changes as part of an investigation
water cycle a model describing how water continually cycles among land, ocean, and atmosphere via transpiration, evaporation, condensation, and crystallization, and precipitation, as well as downhill flows on land
weather the state of the atmosphere at a particular time and place - includes factors such as temperature, air pressure, dryness, cloudiness, wind, and rain
wind the natural movement of the air, especially in the form of a current of air blowing from a particular direction
windward side the side of a mountain that faces the direction that wind usually comes from - it is wet and rainy
cold front the edge of a cold air mass that is moving forward
crosswind a wind blowing across the path of a traveling object, which makes it difficult to maintain direction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
