Term | Definition |
---|---|
energy | the ability to cause change |
kinetic energy | energy caused by motion |
potential energy | stored energy due to the interactions between objects or particles |
work | the transfer of energy that occurs when a force is applied over a distance |
mechanical energy | the sum of the potential energy and kinetic energy in a system |
sound energy | energy carried by sound waves |
thermal energy | the sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles that make up an object |
electric energy | energy carried by an electric current |
radiant energy | energy carried by an electromagnetic wave |
nuclear energy | energy stored in and released from the nucleus of an atom |
chemical energy | energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds |
Law of Conservation of Energy | energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another |
Friction | a contact force that resists the sliding motion of two surfaces that are touching |
wave | disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter |
mechanical wave | a wave that can only travel through a medium |
electromagnetic wave | a wave that can travel through empty space and matter (medium) |
transverse wave | a wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels |
crests | highest points on a wave |
trough | lowest points on a wave |
longitudinal wave | a wave that makes particles in a medium move parallel to the direction that the wave travels |
amplitude | the maximum distance that the wave moves from its rest position |
wavelength | the distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave |
frequency | the number of wavelengths that pass by a point each second |
absorption | the transfer of energy by a wave to the medium through which it travels |
transmission | the passage of light through an object |
reflection | the bouncing of a wave off a surface |
