Lunar cycle and earth's tide cycle

high tide   The tide that occurs when the water is at its highest point.

spring tide   A tide in which the difference between high and low tide is the greatest. This occurs during full and new moons.

neap tide   A tide in which the difference between high and low tide is the least. This occurs during 1st and 3rd quarter moons.

rotational axis   The imaginary axis that an object spins around.

rotate   To spin around on an axis. Example: earth spins creating day & night.

revolve   To move in a circular path around an object. Example: Orbit the sun.

gravitational pull   The force of attraction between two objects in outer space.

waxing gibbous   Moon phase before full moon that is mostly lit on the right side.

waning gibbous   Moon phase after full moon that is mostly lit on the left side.

waxing crescent   Moon phase after new moon with a lighted crescent on the right side.

waning crescent   Moon phase before new moon with a lighted crescent on the left side.

1st quarter   When the moon is perpendicular to the earth and sun and only 1/2 of the lighted side is visible. Waxing

3rd quarter   When the moon is perpendicular to the earth and sun and only 1/2 of the lighted side is visible. Waning

new moon   When the moon is on the same side of teh earth from the sun and the lighted side is NOT visible.

full moon   When the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun and the lighted side entirely visible.  
🗑
lunar eclipse   When the earth casts a shadow over the moon and blocks out the moonlight for several minutes.  
🗑
solar eclipse   The the moon casts a shadow on the earth and blocks the sunlight for several minutes.

waxing moon   When the moon is getting brigher. Lighted side is on the right.  
🗑
waning moon   When the moon is getting darker. Lighted side is on the left.
