What are the major adverse effects of an alpha-1 block? | orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, antipsychotic effect, reflux tachycardia, failure to ejaculate |
What are the major adverse effects of a Dopamine-2 block? | antipsychotic effect, EPS, Increased prolactin (gynecomastia--development of breasts in men or galactorrhea--spontaneous flow of breast milk), amenorrhea (loss of period) |
What are the major effects of Dopamine? | Stimulates the heart, increases hepatic/renal blood flow, regulates fine motor movement. Low levels of dopamine are associated with low BP, muscle rigidity, and EPS. |
What are the major effects of Acetylcholine? | Cholinergic that balances Dopamine; involved in memory, deficient in Alzheimer's disease |
What are the major effects of Norepinephrine? | Regulates mood (in a good way, along w/ serotonin), is an alpha agonist (vasoconstriction, increases BP, aides ejaculation). |
What are the major effects of Serotonin? | Helps regulate mood, attention, behavior, and |
What are the major effects of Histamine? | Alertness, inflammatory response. Blocking causes sedation (Benadryl), and weight gain. |
What does AChE (Acetylcholinesterase) do? | Enzyme that degrades ACh, thus leading to dementia, Alzheimer's. Think AChE inhibitor = Anti-dementia medication. |
What do MAOs do? | Monoamine oxidases fuck with mono-amines, especially nor-epi and seritonin, leading to depression. Boo. Hence the use of MAOI's as antidepressants. |
