Kansas-Nebraska Act | This act established that settlers could decide for themselves whether to allow slavery, in the name of "popular sovereignty" or rule of the people. |
Uncle Tom's Cabin | The best-selling novel of the 19th century that is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. |
Compromise of 1850 | California entered as a free state; included a strict Fugitive Slave Law; slave trade was abolished in Washington DC |
Missouri Compromise | admitted Maine as a free state; prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36°30' north except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri |
Abraham Lincoln | His election caused the Southern states to finally follow through on their threats of secession. |
Fugitive Slave Law | This law stated that in the future any federal marshal who did not arrest an alleged runaway slave could be fined $1,000. Any person aiding a runaway slave was liable to six months' imprisonment and a $1,000 fine. |
John Brown | He led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and seized the federal arsenal, killing seven people (including a free black) and injuring ten or so more. He intended to arm slaves with weapons from the arsenal, but the attack failed. |

Dred Scott Case | He was a slave who sued unsuccessfully for his freedom.The court ruled seven to two against him, finding that neither he, nor any person of African ancestry, could claim citizenship in the United States. |
