Is story telling important to Native Americans? Yes
What do origin stories tell of? Earth and how people came to be
What are goddesses? Female spirits of god who rule parts of the earth
Hopi origin stories? Goddesses (female spirits of god who rule parts of earth) of east and west made birds. Birds were lonely and created humans. One tribal leaser lead people to earth's crust.
What is migration? Movement of people from one country or area of the world to a new home in another country or area of the world
What are migrants? People who move from place to place
What is big game? Large animals hunted for their flesh, skin and other valuable body parts
What are migration routes? Path taken by people
Migration routes of the first Americans? Came during the ice age. Crossed the Bering Sea. Followed herds as they crossed the land bridge.
Natural environment - climate? Pattern of weather over time
Natural environment - vegetation? Plant life of an environment
Natural environment - animal life? Animals that are
Grassland climate? Very little rainfall
Grassland vegetation? Mostly grassland, few trees and shrubs
Grassland animal life? Small rodents, rabbits, hawks
Desert climate? Very dry, little rainfall for crops and drinking
Desert vegetation? Cacti, very few plants
Desert animal life? Snakes, road runners, lizards, bobcats
Mountains climate? Lots of rain and snow
Mountains vegetation? Covered in forests of pine, fir and spruce trees
Mountains animal life? Goats, mountain lions, snow foxes
Arctic ice fields climate? Cold and dry
Arctic ice fields vegetation? No vegetation, ice sheets cover land
Arctic ice fields animal life? Polar bears, seals, snow owls
What does "Inuit" mean? The people
Where did Inuit live? Northern Canada, Greenland and Alaska
Adaptations of the Inuit? Used all parts of animals they hunted - ate the meat, used skins as clothing, blankets and tents, used bones as sleds, knives and harpoons
Shelters of the Inuit? Igloos made of ice and snow
Clothing of the Inuit? Animal skins to stay warm and snow goggles made of wood and bones
What are adaptations? Changes in a way of life that allow the people to survive in a particular environment
What is driftwood? Wood that has washed up onto the shores of rivers or oceans
What are environments? Places with different types of natural surroundings, including air, water, plants and animals (e.g., deserts and grasslands are different environments)
What is adapt? Adjust to different environments
