What are three ways technology helped pioneers turn the Great Plains into productive farmland? Stronger steel plows were used on the thick grassland, windmills were used to pump water to the land's surface, and barbed wire was used to keep animals away from crops.
Why were cattle drives profitable for Texas ranchers? Cattle could be sold for more money in the East.
Why did cattle drives come to an end? They were no longer neccessary once railroads reached Texas
What is a lasting effect of the search for gold? The quest for gold lured many settlers to the West.

What is the significance of the Battle of Wounded Knee? It was the last major battle between the United States and Native Americans.
How are Native Americans groups keeping traditions alive today? They are gaining control of more land, maintaining tribal languages, and sharing tribal stories.
