Restoration (The) An event that took place on May 8, 1660, when Charles II, the eldest son of Charles I, became King of England and had a major impact on the settlement of South Carolina.
Lord Proprietors Eight supporters to whom King Charles II of England gave a grant to establish a colony that included land that later became South Carolina.
Quitrent An annual rent on the land the settlers paid generation after generation.
Headright Method This method granted each male colonist a certain amount of land depending on the number of persons in his family.
Governer Head of the land.
Immigrant One who moves to a new colony or country to settle there.
Capital The head city of the government.
Naval Stores Pine trees, vast forest and pitch tar.
Staple Crop One that most people eat or are able to use.
Majority More than half.
Juror A citizen selected to serve on a jury and make a decision about a case brought before the jury.
Sounds Long and broad inlets along the Northern Carolina.
Contract To pay a quitrent to the land.
Faction A small united group within a larger group.
Dissenters Protestants who were not Anglicans-moved into the colony.
Status Quo To keep things the way they were.
Disenfranchised Denied the right to vote.
Compromise A way to settle disagreements in which each side gives way a little in its demands.
Established Church The official Church of South Carolina.
Parishes Church districts.
Militia The citizen army.
