Sentence Structure

simple sentence | has a subject, predicate, complete thought |
clause | a simple sentence |
subject | contains the main noun or pronoun that is doing or being |
predicate | contains the linking or action verb |
independent clause | can end with a period because it has a complete thought |
dependent clause | begins with a subordinating conjunction so it does not have a complete thought |
compound sentence | has two independent clauses joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction OR a semicolon (;) |
complex sentence | has an independent clause joined to a dependent clause by a subordinating conjunction |
coordinating conjunction | joins independent clauses (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) |
subordinating conjunction | begins a dependent clause |
