Cytology (cyto-, -cyte, or -cytic; Gk. KUTOS, hollow or cell) the study of cells
Cell (L. CELLAE, chambers) the functional and structural unit of life (the most basic unit of life) (++ Robert Hooke, cork; Matthias Schleiden, Theodore Schwann)
Protoplasm (proto- or prot-; Gk. PROTOS, first) + plasm (PLASSEN, to mold) All the living substances within a cell.
Unicellular organism An organism made of only one cell.
Multicellular organsim An organism made of many cells (++ cells cannot survive on their own)
Colonial organism An organism made of similar cells living together; each can behave as a unicellular organism.
Tissue A group of similar cells doing he same job
Organ A group of tissues working together to accomplish the same job
Organ System A group of organs working together to accomplish life functions.
Cell Junction Connections between cells formed by the interaction of proteins.
Plasmodesmata Tiny passageways between the cytoplasm of plant cells. They are lined with the plasma membrane making the connection continuous.
