A Closer Look At Some Catholic Symbols

QuestionAnswer
What significance do symbols have in our everyday lives? A symbols carries a special meaning for a person or community. For example a ring represents the love between 2 people.
How might examining symbols help build our understanding of the Catholic faith? You understand the true meaning behind the symbol, which means you learn more about your faith.
What is a sign? A notice or object that points the way and gives names.
What is a rite? A way an event is celebrated by a community.
What is a ritual? An action that is a regular part of a person's life and that has a regular place and meaning.
What is a symbol? An object or action that has a special meaning.
Give an example of a sign. Stop sign.
Give an example of a rite. Initiation ceremony.
Give an example of a ritual. Blessing Holy Water.
Give an example of a symbol. Crucifix.
What does a crucifix symbolise? The sacrifice that Jesus offered by dieing on the cross for us.
What does a cross symbolise? The death and resurrection of Christ.
What does the Sacred Heart symbolise? The love of Jesus for all humanity.
What does Alpha and Omega represent? Christ refers to himself as Alpha and Omega which means the first and last.
What does a fish symbolise? The fish symbolises Christ.
What does a lamb symbolise and describe what it looks like. It represents innocence, purity, sacrifice and Christ since he was the lamb of God. It looks like a lamb that is sometimes holding a cross.
What does a dove symbolise and describe what it looks like. A dove symbolises the holy spirit. If it is carrying a leaf, it symbolises peace. It looks like a dove with sometimes a halo or a leaf.
