Free Soil Party Policitial party which opposed the expanding of slavery into the territories.
John Brown An abolitionist that fought slavery, a symbol of the moral issue of slavery. He was hanged for treason in 1859.
Kansas-Nebraska Act Became law in 1854-divided the area into 2 territories and created popular sovereignty for both.
Compromise of 1850 California admitted as a free state, Utah and New Mexico territories decide about slavery, Texas-New Mexico boundary resolved, sale of slaves in D.C. banned, but slavery could continue, People in free states were to help capture and return escaped slaves
Harriet Tubman A conductor on the Underground railroad, helped slaves escape to the North.
Jefferson Davis Elected President of the Confederacy, February 4, 1861.
Abraham Lincoln elected President in 1860 beleived slavery was immoral
Stephen Douglas author of Popular sovereignty and defeated Lincoln for a senate seat.
