cell division

TermDefinition
mitosis The middle part of asexual cell division. Mitosis is the process used by the cell to form two nuclei inside the cell.
asexual cell division When a cell divides into two cells. These cells are exactly the same- a clone of each other. This is how all your body cells divide to make more cells for your body.
interphase The first part of asexual cell division. The cell grows and then the cell"twins" (replication) its chromosomes DNA which results in two sets of chromosomes.
46 chromosomes the amount of chromosomes in all Homo sapiens cells except the sex cells (sperm and egg)
23 the amount of chromosomes in sex cells of Homo sapiens. When a sperm and egg combine it will form the first cell of the Homo sapien with the correct 46 needed to be that species. 23 from mom,23 from dad.
Cytokinesis When the cell membrane in an animal cell pinches into two cells. When the cell wall is formed in the middle of the plant cell and it breaks into two cells.
The Cell Cycle The regular sequence of growth and division that cells go through. Interphase-Mitosis (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase)- Cytokinesis.
prophase First step in Mitosis- chromosomes twin and nuclear membrane dissolves
metaphase Second step in Mitosis- Chromosomes are pushed by the spindle fibers to the middle of the cell.
anaphase Third step in Mitosis- Chromosomes separate to opposite ends of the cells- pulled by spindle fibers.
telophase Forth step in Mitosis. Nuclear membranes form around both sets of chromosomes resulting in two identical nuclei. End of Mitosis
replication Process where DNA is copied.
chromosome Double rod of chromatin attached together by the centromere.
Daughter Cells The two resulting cells that are made during cell division- cytokinesis stage
meiosis Cell division that only occurs in the reproductive organs of organisms. The resulting nucleus has half the correct amount of chromosomes in the sex cells.
Parent Cell A cell that has grown and is ready to divide.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
