States of Matter

chapman-pnhs-states of matter I.S. vocab

QuestionAnswer
solid state of matter when the shape and volume are definite, particle arrangement is close together and organized
liquid state of matter when volume is definite, but shape is not, particle arrangement is close together, but more room to move
gas state of matter when shape and volume are not definite, particles are constantly moving (very spaced out)
kinetic energy the energy an object has due to its motion (moving faster=more kinetic energy)
phase change a reversible physical change that occurs when a state of matter changes from one to another
endothermic a type of phase change that absorbs energy from its surroundings (ex: melting)
heat of fusion the amount of energy absorbed (depending on the substance) during a phase change
exothermic a type of phase change that releases energy (ex: freezing)
vaporization a type of phase change when the liquid changes into a gas (endothermic process)
heat of vaporization the amount of heat absorbed during the vaporization process
evaporation the process that changes a substance from a liquid to a gas (temperatures below the substance's boiling point)
vapor pressure the pressure caused by the collisions of the vapor and the container walls (when vapor is in a container)
condensation the phase change when a substance changes from a gas/vapor to a liquid
sublimation the phase change in which a substance changes from a solid to a gas/vapor (without changing to a liquid first)
deposition when a gas/vapor changes into a solid without changing into a liquid first (reverse of sublimation)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
