What is a cotton gin and who created it? Eli Whitney, It revolutionized the cotton industry, boosting farming and resulted in a cotton boom!
Cotton belt: area stretching from south Carolina to Texas producing most of the nations cotton.
Crop rotation: Changing to type of crop you grow in a field every year to avoid depleting nutrients and minerals.
Cash crop: any crop grown in large quantities for money.
What were some disadvantages of cotton? -roads were few and far between, and poorly maintained -Rivers provided easy way to transport goods. -cotton plants sap nutrients out od soil
how many families had slaves? about 1/3 of white families in the south owned slaves.
Free southern society order: planters-richest and most powerful yeoman-owners of small farms poor whites-didn't own enough land for cash crops Free African Americans-great amounts of discrimination were faced.
Why did cities and states limit the rights of free slaves? They feared former slaves would encourage slave rebellions.
What were some laws limiting rights of free slaves? -no voting, traveling freely, living in some states not permitted, couldn't hold certain jobs, and had to be represented by a white person in business affairs.
What were the slaves treated like? - they were treated like property and people could do whatever they wanted to them.
What would slave masters do to encourage obedience? -they encouraged them by whipping, shackling, chaining, or otherwise punishing them.
Why were so many slaves illiterate? -Literacy laws prohibited anyone from teaching slaves to read.
how did religion help slaves? -It boosted their sprits and helped them "escape" their hardships.
What were some small ways slaves tried to improve their lives? -sewing scraps of cloth into quilts or clothes -Growing gardens, hunting, and fishing to improve rations. -Rebelled by working slowly and told Folktales with morals to pass on to children.
How did parents try to pas their culture to their children? -sang Christian songs about freedom called spirituals. -told folktales w/morals to pass on culture. -taught children to outsmart slaveholders through storytelling.
