Nicaragua | communist lead government that related to the Iran-Contra affairs |
Cold war | the competition that developed after WWII between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for power and influence in the world, lasting until the collaspe of the Soviet Union in 1991 |
Mikhail Gorbachev | Soviet leader whose bold reforms lead to the break-up of the Soviet Union in the late 1980's |
George H.W. Bush | 43rd President, 1989-1993: continued Reagans conservative policies: brought together the United Nations coalition to fight the Persian Gulf war |
Persian Gulf war | 1991, a limited military opperation to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait |
Iraq | tried to take over Kuwait and the U.S. got involved, Irai's left but Suddam Hussein |
Kuwait | was invaded by Iraq, the U.S. stepped in to help and chased Iraqi's out |
Berlin Wall | barrier built by east german government to seperate communist an non-communist berlin |
Saddam Hussein | leader of Iraq from 1979-2003, he was a dictator |
Recession | a period of slow business activity |
Clarence Thomas | Supreme Court nominee who was critized for being too conservative, curing Bush's time in office |
Iran-Contra affairs | scandal during the Reagan administration involving the use of secret Iranian arms sales to support thr Nicaraguan Contras |
Strategic Defence Initative | President Reagan proposed defence system againt a Soviet missile attack, known as "Star Wars" |
Savings and Loan Scandal | During Reagan's presidency, the bank lent out loans worth a lot of money that people could not pay back and the government had to pay the money back |
Deficit | the amount by which a sum of money falls short of the required amount |
Teflon President | Reagan" no matter what he did wrong, it never stuck to him and the people still loved him |
