Cell Cycle
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cell Cycle | sequence of events from the production of a cell from the time it is produced to the time it reproduces |
Mitosis | Where the nucleus is duplicated and the chromosomes of a cell divide and are evenly distributed |
Interphase | Part of the cell cycle in which a cell carries out its metabolic processes and performs its functions in the body |
Cytokinesis | The cytoplasm of a cell divides into two |
Prophase | first stage of mitosis and meiosis I and II when the already replicicated chromosomes condense |
Metaphase | second phase of mitosis; chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell |
Anaphase | third phase of mitosis; chromosomes split and are pulled apart towards opposite ends of the cell |
Telophase | last phase of mitosis; two new nuclei are formed and the chromosomes uncoil |
Daughter Cell | the mew cells created during mitosis and meiosis |
Cancer | uncontrolled cell division |
Reproduction | production of offspring by an organism |
Chromatin | long strands of DNA in the nucleus of a cell during cell interphase |
Chromatids | two exact copies of DNA that make up a chromosome |
Centromere | cell structure that joins the two sister chromatin of a chromosome |
Chromosome | Cell structure that carries the genetic material that is copied and passed from generation to generation of a cell; consists of 2 sister chromatids connected by a centriole |
Spindle | cell structures composed of microtubules that aid in the process of cell division by moving the chromatids through the process ofmitosis and meiosis |
Aster | star shaped structure that forms around the centrioles during cell division |
Cleavage Furrow | indentations of the cell membrane that form during cytokinesis in an animal cell; eventually makes new cells |
Cell Plate | precursor to the cell wall that forms during cytokinesis of a plant cell wall creating two new plant cells |
Inhibition | slows or stops a process from happening |
