Structures & Types of Poetry
Term | Definition |

Blank Verse | Unrhymed but metered poetry |
Couplet | A pair of lines |
Free Verse | Poetry lacking both rhyme and meter |
Meter | A rhythm of stressed and unstressed syllables |
Foot | A patterned set of two or three syllables |
Iamb | A foot of one unstressed syllable, then one stressed syllable |
Trochee | A foot of one stressed syllable, then one unstressed syllable |
Anapest | A foot of two unstressed syllables, then one stressed syllable |
Dactyl | A foot of one stressed syllable, then two unstressed syllables |
Quatrain | A group of four lines |
Refrain | A repeated element at regular intervals, like the chorus of a song |
Stanza | A group of lines separated from other groups by line breaks |
Epic | Book-length, narrative poetry |
Lyric Poem | A poem attempting to convey either an insight or an emotional impression to a reader |
Narrative Poem | A poem that tells a story |
