pollution Contamination of a habitat with substances which make it less favorable for organisms
habitat loss When an organism loses a large part of its natural home
DDT Long-Lasting insecticide which caused the decline of some animal species (dichlor-diphenyl-trichlorethane)
ground water water standing in or moving through the soil and underlying rock layers (the source of water in wells and springs)
run-off the part of precipitation which flows over the land without sinking into the soil
erosion the washing away of soil particles by water, wind, ice, or earth movements such as landslides
topsoil the uppermost portion of the soil, which is richer in organic material and lighter in texture than the material below
silt fine mineral particles in the soil
clearcutting the cutting of all the trees in an area in one operation
sewage untreated waste material from homes and industry
siltation fine sand, or the like, carried by moving or running water and deposited as a sediment in our lakes and streams
Agriculture Pollution Waste from all types of farming activities, including run-off from pesticides and fertilizer us, and from feedlots; erosion and dust from ploughing; and animal manure
Aquifer A body of permeable rock or sediment saturated with groundwater
Food Waste Food that is fit for eating but intentionally thrown away at grocery stores or in our homes
Greenhouse Effect The process that occurs when gases in Earth's atmoshrere trap the sun's heat
microplastics Very small fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 Millimeters in length
non-point source pollution Pollution that occurs when runoff from rain and snowfall carries pollutants into rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands, and groundwater
Point Source Pollution Any single identifiable source of pollution from which pollutants are discharged, such as a pipe, ditch, ship, or factory smokestack
Waste Water Water that has been used once, or for a short period of time, before being thrown away
Single Use Plastics Plastic that is used once, or for a short period of time, before being thrown away
