3. Baby Boom | A period of sharp increase in the birthrate, as that in the U.S. following World War II. |
4. Productivity | The quality, state, or fact of being able to generate, create, enhance, or bring forth goods and services |
5. Taft-Hartley Act | A law that restricted the power of labor unions. |
6. Fair Deal | The principles of the liberal wing of the Democratic party under the leadership of President Harry S Truman, consisting largely of a continuation and development of the principles of the New Deal. |
7. Interstate Highway Act | 1956 law that authorized the spending of 31 billion dollars to build a 41,000 mile highway. |
8. Sunbelt | The southern and southwestern region of the U.S. |
9. Information Industry | Businesses that provide informational services. |
10. Franchise Business | Allows company to distribute its products through regional outlets through independent owners. |
11. Multinational Corporation | A corporation with operations in two or more countries. |
12. AFL-CIO | The unification of the AFL and the CIO in 1955. |
13. California Master Plan | Called for three tiers o higher education: Research universities, community college, and state colleges. All accessible to the states' citizens. |
14. Beatnik | Group of writers and artists that criticized American society in the 1950s. |
15. Inner City | An older part of a city, densely populated and usually deteriorating, inhabited mainly by poor, often minority, groups. |
16. Urban Renewal | The process of redeveloping dilapidated or no longer functional urban areas |
17. Termination Policy | Ended all programs monitored by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. |
18. Consumerism | Advocacy of a high rate of consumption and spending as a basis for a sound economy |
19. Median Family Income | Measure of an average family income. |
20. Nuclear Family | A social unit composed of two parents and one or more children. |
21. Rock-and-Roll | A style of popular music that derives in part from blues and folk music and is marked by a heavily accented beat and a simple, repetitive phrase structure. |
22. Service Sector | Businesses that provided services rather than goods. |
