Properties of, states of, changes of mattter

What is volume? The amount of SPACE that matter takes up
A solid has: -definite shape -definite volume -particles only vibrate in place
A gas has: -particles that move about freely - no definite shape - no definite volume
A liquid has: -definite volume -no definite shape -particles that slide past each other
What is a physical change? A change in shape, size, or state of matter with NO new matter being formed
What kind of change is melting ice? Why? Physical. The ice cubes changed shape, and into a liquid. No new matter was formed.
Baking soda is added to vinegar. What kind of change is it? What observations suggest a gas has formed? Chemical. Bubbles are created in the vinegar.
How does thermal energy travel when ice melts? When ice melts it transfers thermal energy from the warmer substance to the colder one.
What is the state of water change in a kernel of popcorn when heated? liquid to a gas
What is the visible evidence that when water is heated, it is changing state? You can observe bubbles forming in the water and steam is visible.
A student watches an adult strike a match. What kind of change is occurring? Why? Chemical change. New matter, ashes, are formed.
What state of matter change occurs when you can smell vanilla in a container that just covered the vanilla, but never actually had any vanilla in it? The liquid changed to a gas.
What property of matter is demonstrated when observing that syrup sinks to the bottom of a container and oil floats to the top? Density
