| Paradigm | a mental model or structure for perceiving, understanding, and responding to the world. |
| Gantt chart | used for project management to show how the components of a task are scheduled over time |
| The program evaluation and review technique (PERT) | allows large, long-term, and complex projects to be shown graphically in order to clarify critical task sequences, potential bottlenecks, and the time required for them. |
| Total quality management (TQM) | offered a way to build in high performance by maximizing employee potential and continuous improvement of process. |
| 85/15 rule of TQM | proposes that 85 percent of problems encountered are the result of faulty systems rather than unproductive employees. |
| Line authority | the right of managers to direct the activities of subordinates under their immediate control |
| staff authority | related to the expert knowledge of specialists and involves their advising and recommending courses of action |
| span of control | Each supervisor has a certain number of people who report to him or her |
| Groupthink | An implicit form of group consensus in which openness and effective decision making are sacrificed to conformity |
