Desktop computers | single-user systems designed with microproessor technology where an entire CPU is contained on a single computer chip |
Tablets PCs | Which are designed similar to a pad of paper and a pencil |
Handheld computers | PDAs, are palm-sized and contain personal management applications |
Smartphones | cellular phones that are able to send and receive e-mail messages and access the internet |

Input devices | such as keyboards, mouse, scanner, microphone, digital camera, and DVD drive and used to enter data and instructions into the computer |
Peripherial devices | printers and scanners are added to make a computer more versatile. |
Output devices | moninters and priters dsiplay data, dvd+rws, disk drives, and memory keys store data, and speakers communicate audio output |
motherboard | the main circuit board |
expansion boards | are circuit boards that connect to the motherboard too add functionality to the computer |
bus | a set of circuits that connect the CPU to other componets |
Operation system (OS) | software is run automantically when the computer is turn on and is used to control procssing and peripherals, run application software, and control input and output, among other tasks |
CPU (central processing Unit) | processor processes data and controls the flow of data bewteen the computer's other units |
ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) | Which can perform arithmetic and logic operations |
Megahertz | MHZ, million of cycles per second |
Gigahertz | GHz, billion of cycles per second |
Application software | written by programmers to perform a specific task, such as a word processor |
Environment | a computer's hardware and software configuation |
Utility program | have one clearly defined tasks |
device driver | one type of utility program |
Memory-resident | they are programs to perform tasks that are in addition to the tasks required to run the computer |
ROM (Read Only Memory) | contains the most basic operatin instructions for a computer |
RAM (Random Access Memory) | primary or main memory, is memory where data and instructions are stored temporarily |
SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) | is high-speed memory referred to as cache (pronounced "cash") |
IM | Instant messaging |
IT | information on technology |
WAN (Wide-Area Network) | used to connect over large geographical distances |
