Chapter 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
balance an instrument used to determine the mass of objects
conclusion the part of an experiment that states the results from analyzing the data.
data information collected by performing an experiment
density a quality of an object or substance that describes the amount of matter (mass) per unit volume.
experiment a test, or trial, composed of a series of steps used to discover new information.
horizontal axis The bottom of a line or bar graph.
hypothesis An educated guess as to the solution of a problem or the outcome of an experiment.
mass The amount of matter contained in an object.
material A list of the apparatus and supplies needed to perform an experiment.
pictograph A graph that uses symbols to display quantitative data.
pie graph A round graph that has pie shaped pieces. Pie graphs are used most often to display percentage data.
procedure A series of investigative steps used to gather data designed to test a hypothesis.
questions The part of an experiment that identifies the experiment's purpose.
SI System A system of measurement developed to standardize measurement, using standardized units and subunits expressed in powers of 10.
tare weight The mass of the empty container before an object is placed in it to be weighed on the balance.
vertical axis The line that forms the side of a line or bar graph.
volume The amount of space occupied or contained by an object.
