nominating conventions | A meeting at which a political party selects it's presidential and vice presidential candidates ; first held in 1820's. |
Jacksonian democracy | An expansion of voting rights during the popular Andrew Jackson administation. |
Democratic Party | A political party formed by supporters od Andrew Jackson after the presidential election of 1824. |
John C. Calhoun | American politician and supported slavery and states right's, surved as vice president to Jackson, and was instumental in the South Carolina nullification crisis. |
Spoils System | A politician's practice of giving government jobs to his or her supporters. |
Martin Van Buren | American politician and secretary of state under Jackson, he later became the 8th President of the U.S. |
Kitchen Cabinet | President Jackson's group of informal advisors; so called because they often met in the White House kitchen. |
