6. U-boat | German submarine |
7. Lusitania | British passenger liner sunk by a German u-boat during WWI |
8. Zimmerman Note | telegram written by German foreign Minister Zimmerman proposing an alliance between germany and mexico against the U.S. during WWI |
9. Selective Service Act | act passed by congress in 1917 authorizing a draft of men for military service |
10. CPI (Committee on Public Information) | government agency created to encourage Americans to support the war |
11. Conscientious Objecter | person whose moral or religious beliefs forbid them to fight in wars |
12. Espionage Act | act passed in 1917 enacting severe penalties for anyone engaged in disloyal or treasonable activities |
13. Great Migration | movement of African Americans form the rural south to the industrial north |
14. Convoy | group of merchant ships sailing together, protected by war ships |
15. Self-Determination | the right of people to choose their own form of government |
16. League of Nations | world organizations established after WWI to promote peaceful cooperation between countries |
17. Reparations | payment for war damages |
18. Irreconcilable | isolationist senators who opposed any treaty ending WWI that had a League of Nations folded into it |
19. Reservationists | group of Senators who opposed the Treaty of Versailles to end WWI, unless specific changes were included (led by Henry Cabot Lodge) |

22. Red Scare | fear that communists were working to destroy the American way of life |
23. Palmer Raids | series of raids in the early 20's against suspected radicals and communists (initiated by Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer) |
