Term | Definition |

Assist | A pass to a teammate that leads directly to a successful basket. |
Basket | – The metal hoop through which points are scored. |
Blocking | A foul committed by a defensive player when he or she moves into the path of an offensive player causing contact. |
Charging | A foul committed by an offensive player who has the ball and runs into a defensive player who is standing still. |
Cut | A quick move toward the basket. |
Double Dribble | A violation that occurs when a player stops dribbling and then starts again. |
Dribble | To move the ball by bouncing it. |
Fast Break | When the offensive team moves quickly toward the basket, catching the defensive team off guard. |
Field Goal/Field Shot | A shot taken from anywhere on the court |
Foul Shot/Free Throw | An uncontested shot taken from the foul line by the offensive player who was fouled while shooting. |
Jump Ball | When the referee puts the ball into play by tossing it up between two opposing players. This is also the play that officially starts the game. |
Lay-Up | Usually a one-handed shot attempted while very close to the basket. |
Personal Foul | Illegal body contact between two opposing players. |
Rebound | Gaining control of an unsuccessful shot that bounces off the rim or backboard. |
Technical Foul | A violation of rules of conduct. Example: Arguing with the referee. |
Traveling | Taking three or more steps without dribbling while having control or the ball. |
