what does ESR stand for Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate
ESR is a nonspecific marker of inflammation
normal ESR for men under 50 are 0-10 mm per hr
normal ESR for men over 50 are 0-20 mm per hr
normal ESR for women over 50 are 0-30 mm per hr
normal ESR for women under 50 are 0-20 mm per hr
examples of elevated levels are menses, pregnancy, RA, lupus, cancer
examples of decreased levels are Presence of sickle cells, polycythemia, Spherocytosis, Microcytosis, Increased plasma viscosity
The ESR is elevated in conditions that cause changes in plasma proteins
proteins that increase rapidly in serum during acute infection, inflammation, or following injury acute phase proteins
the total of substances making up mass; a cluster or clumps of particles aggregate
an excess of red blood cells in the peripheral blood polycythemia
