Slander Speaking lies that harms a person's reputation
Libel Writing or printing lies that harm a person's reputation
Civil Liberties The freedoms to think and act without government interference
Censorship Banning printed material or films
Petition A formal request
Eminent Domain The right of the government to take private property for public use
Grand Jury Group of citizens who review evidence against the accused
Indictment A formal charge by a group of citizens/to formally accuse someone of a crime
Civil Cases Lawsuits that involve disagreements between people rather than crimes
Due Process Following established legal procedures to protect those accused of crimes
Amendment I Freedom of: Religion, Speech, the Press, Right of people to gather together/assemble, and Right to petition the government
Amendment II We have the right to bare arms and to own guns
Amendment III Citizens cannot be forced to house and feed soldiers and this gives us the right to not have soldiers live in our house
Amendment IV (4) We are protected from unreasonable punishments and this gives us the right to not have the police search us or our belongings unreasonably or without cause
Amendment V (5) This amendment includes: right not to incriminate yourself, right not to be charged with the same offense twice, right to have due process, Eminent Domain
Amendment VI (6) This amendment includes: right to have a speedy criminal trial, right to have a jury in criminal trial, and right to have a lawyer in a criminal trial
Amendment VII (7) Right to have a jury in a civil trial and the judge cannot overturn a jury's decision in a civil case
Amendment VIII (8) Freedom from cruel and unusual punishment; freedom from excessive bails and fines
Amendment IX (9) Rights specifically listed in the Constitution shall not limit the rights not listed in the Constitution
Amendment X (10) Powers not specifically listed in the Constitution for the federal government are given to the states
