Chapter 5 - The Celebration of Baptism

**catechumenate | a period of formation for Christian initiation that includes prayer and liturgy, religious instruction and service to others. Cathecumen - someone undergoing preparation. |
**Sacraments of Christian Initiation | Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation |
RCIA | Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Celebrate three sacraments of Christian Initiation at the Easter Vigil |
Godparents | a Christian example and promise to support the child as he or she grows in faith |
Sunday | the ideal day to celebrate Baptism, the Lord's day. Highlights the fact that we rise to new life like Jesus did |
Celebrant | bishop, priest or deacon who celebrates the sacrament of Baptism for and with the community |
**Baptism | "entrance" sacrament in which the parents present the child to the Church. The celebrant traces the sign of the cross on the child as a sign of new life and says "I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. |
**Original Sin | During Baptism, the celebrant asks God to free the child from Original Sin. Then the child is anointed with oil on the chest. |
Water | an important sign/symbol in baptism. The celebrant pours water over the head of the child or the child is immersed in water three times. |
Sacred Chrism | perfumed oil blessed by the bishop. A sign of the Gift of the Holy Spirit |
White Garment | placed on the newly baptized as a symbol of the child's new life in Christ |
Candle | given to child's parents lit from the Easter Candle |
