Clone A genetically identical organism
Plasmid Closed loops of DNA in bacteria
Genomics Study of genomes
DNA Fingerprint A sampling of DNA used to identify an organism by analyzing DNA
Genetic Engineering Changing an organism's DNA to give it new traits
Recombinant DNA DNA that contains genes from multiple organisms
Transgenic An organism that has one or more genes from another organism inserted into its genome
Gene sequencing Determining the order of DNA nucleotides in genes
Human Genome Project A map and sequence of human genetic coding and identifying all the genes in the sequence
Genetic screening Testing a person's DNA to determine their risk of having or passing a long a genetic disorder
Gene therapy The replacement, addition, or deletion of defective genes into a genome to treat a disease
Restriction enzyme Enzymes that cut DNA at specific nucleotide sequences
Gel electrophoresis Using an electrical current to separate DNA fragments from each other by size
Bioinformatics Using computer databases to organize and analyze biological data
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) A chain reaction that quickly produces millions of copies of DNA sequences
Primer A short strand of DNA that acts as a starting point for a new strand
