How is Jesus Christ Alive in the Church Today?

sacrament | an effective sign given to us by Jesus Christ through which we share in God's life |
sacramentals | blessings, actions, and objects that help us to respond to the grace of God that we receive in the sacraments |
sanctifying grace | the grace that we receive in the sacraments |
liturgy | the official public prayer of the Church |
sanctify | to make holy |
catechumenate | a process of formation for the Sacraments of Christian Initiation that includes prayer and liturgy, religious instruction based on Scripture and Tradition, and service to others |
catechumens | adults and older children of catechetical age who have entered the catechumenate and are participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) |
celebrant | the bishop, priest, or deacon who celebrates a sacrament for and with the community |
chrism | perfumed oil blessed by a bishop |
diocese | a local area of the Church led by a bishop |
candidates | those preparing for a sacrament (e.g., Confirmation, Holy Orders) |
sponsor | a Catholic, at least 16 years of age, has received the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, is an example of Christian living, is respected by the candidate, involved in the candidate's preparation for Confirmation and will help him/her to grow in faith |
Paschal | a word that means "of or relating to the Passover |
Mass | the celebration of the Eucharist |
conversion | turning back to God with all one's heart |
venial sin | less serious sin that weakens our friendship with God but does not turn us completely away from him |
mortal sin | very serious sin that turns us completely away from God - three conditions are present: (1) the sin is about a serious matter; (2) we commit the sin knowing that it is seriously wrong; (3) we commit the sin completely of our own free will. |
conscience | our ability to know the difference between good and evil, right and wrong |
charity | a gift from God that enables us to love him and to love our neighbor; a theological virtue also called love |
deacon | a man ordained to share in Christ's mission by assisting bishops and priests in the service of the Church |
priest | a man who is ordained to preach the gospel and serve the faithful, especially by celebrating the Eucharist and the other sacraments |
bishop | a man who has received the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and continues the Apostles' mission of leadership and service |
