To report past events that only happen once, and actions that advance the plot or storyline use... passé composé
To describe an action that happened over a period of time, describing scene, weather, paricipants (appearance, age, character, emotion), and habitual or ongoing actions in the past imparfait
To describe an action that continued over a period of time use imparfait
To express an action that will happen soon use present tense
To describe an action that's about to happen use aller + infinitive
In formal contexts, express the future using future
In passé compose the past participle agrees with the... preceding direct object
