Mass Movement/Water Erosion/Glaciers/Waves/Wind

QuestionAnswer
What is mass movement and what causes it? Any process that moves sediment downhill
What are the four types of mass movement? Landslide,Mudslide, Creep, Slump.
What is a Landslide? Rock falling down a slope.
What is a Mudslide? Water and rock falling down a slope.
What is a Creep? Slow downhill movement of sediment
What is a Slump? Large rock all of a sudden goes downhill.
What is the material moved by erosion? Sediment
What is deposition? Creates deltas and alluvial fans, adds soil to rivers.
What land features are created by erosion? Waterfalls, Flood plains, Meanders, Oxbow Lakes.
What is a waterfall? When water flows over rock and falls to the ground.
What is a meander? Widining, zig zagging course through a river
What is an oxbow lake? piece of a river that's no longer being flowned into.
What is a flood plain? A plain formed by sediment
What features are made by deposits from rivers? Alluvial Fans and deltas.
What are alluvial fans? when a stream leaves a mountain range shaped like a fan.
What is a delta? Sediment deposited where river flows into a lake or an ocean.
What is Karst Topography? Weathering caused by groundwater erosion
What two features can form from groundwater deposition? Stalactite, stalagmite
What is stalactite? on roof, like an icicle
What is stalagmite? Cone shaped and on the floor.
What features can form from groundwater erosion? Caves and caverns
What's Till? A mixture of sediments that the glacier deposits
What are the land features that can be made by glacial erosion? arete, horns, cirques, and glacial lakes.
What is moraine? Till deposited at the edge of a glacier.
What is Drumlin? Long mound of till, shaped in the direction of glacier flow
What are kettle lakes? small depression, forms when chunk of ice is left in glacier till
What land features are made from wave erosion? Sea caves, sea arches, sea stacks, and wave cut cliffs.
What is a spit? sediment carried on beach by a long shore current.
What is runoff? Water that flows over the ground surface rather than soaking into the ground.
What are the five factors that control the amount of runoff? Rain, vegetation, soil, land shape, and how people use land.
What are rills? Tiny grooves in soil
What is a gully? Large groove or channel in the soil that carries runoff after a rainstorm.
What is a stream? A channel along which the water is continually flowing down a slope.
What is a river? A large stream
